The Final Judgment

JUDGED / REWARDED BY OUR WORKS/DEEDS:

1 Nephi 15:32… must be judged of their works

1 Nephi 10:20-21 … for all thy doings thou shalt be brought into judgment.

1 Nephi 15:32-33 … they must be judged of their works

2 Nephi 9:44 … all men shall be judged of their works

2 Nephi 13:11 … the reward of their hands shall be upon them

2 Nephi 27:27 … I know all their works. For shall the work say of him that made it, he made me not?

2 Nephi 28:23 … judged according to their works, from whence they must go into the place prepared for them

Mosiah 3:23-24 … they shall be judged, every man according to his works, whether they be good, or whether they be evil

Mosiah 16:10-12 … brought to stand before the bar of God, to be judged of him according to their works

Alma 3:26-27 … reap their rewards according to their works

Alma 5:15-16 … stand before God to be judged according to the deeds which have been done in the mortal body

Alma 41:3-5 … requisite with the justice of God that men should be judged according to their works; and if their works were good in this life, and the desires of their hearts were good, that they should also, at the last day, be restored unto that which is good. And if their works are evil they shall be restored unto them for evil.

Alma 42:23 ... judged according to their works, according to the law and justice

Alma 42:27 … in the last day it shall be restored unto him according to his deeds

Helaman 15:4 … Lamanites hath he hated because their deeds have been evil continually

Has anyone besides myself noticed that none of these scriptures say we are saved by works? But our worthiness to be saved by the love and mercy (Grace) of Christ will be judged by our deeds, toils, and actions (‘works’). Elder George Teasdale, late member of the Quorum of the Twelve taught this in a General Conference address:

     "We represent Christ by accepting His doctrine. When we are in favor of the doctrine of Christ we manifest our faith by our works, and consequently are saved by grace and are justified by faith, because we manifest our faith by our works. There is the key.

     "I pray God our eternal Father that we may have grace to overcome temptation, obey His commandments and in the end be saved in His kingdom through Jesus Christ." (Conference Report, April 1899)

The key phrases in this quote are: "saved by grace"; "justified by faith"; "manifest our faith by our works".

Through our works we display that our faith is sufficient for the Savior to save and redeem us through his grace and return us home to God. Through our works we show Him that we mean what we say. One of my children used this example: We tell the Lord we love Him and have faith in Him, and He smiles a loving smile and says “Prove it.” We prove it through our actions.

2 Nephi 25:17-18 … ”he shall bring forth his words unto them, which words shall judge them at the last day, for they shall be given them for the purpose of convincing them of the true Messiah

2 Nephi 29:11…”for out of the books which shall be written I will judge the world, every man according to their works, according to that which is written.

Words of Mormon 1:11 … shall be judged at the great and last day, according to the word of God which is written

Mosiah 3:23-24 … words shall stand as a testimony at the judgment day

3 Nephi 27:25-27 ... “out of the books which have been written, and which shall be written, shall this people be judged”

JUDGED / REWARDED BY OUR THOUGHTS, WORDS, and WORKS/DEEDS:

Mosiah 4:29-30 - "And finally, I cannot tell you all the things whereby ye may commit sin; for there are divers ways and means, even so many that I cannot number them. But this much I can tell you, that if ye do not watch yourselves, and your thoughts, and your words, and your deeds, and observe the commandments of God, and continue in the faith of what ye have heard concerning the coming of our Lord, even unto the end of your lives, ye must perish. And now, O man, remember, and perish not."

Alma 12:14 - "For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will also condemn us; and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence."
