Ezekiel's Stick of Judah and Stick of
Joseph
The Old Testament prophet Ezekiel lived at a
time that the House (or, Nation) of Israel
had, first, been divided into the two countries of Israel (presided over by
the tribe of Joseph) and the country of Judah (presided over by the tribe of
Judah), and second, both nations had been taken captive and carried away as
slaves into foreign countries. Several of the prophesies in his book deal
with the restoration (or, resurrection) of the House/Nation of Israel,
including chapter 37:
THE hand of the LORD was upon me, and carried me out in the spirit
of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley which was
full of bones, And caused me to pass by them round about: and, behold,
there were very many in the open valley; and, lo, they were
very dry.
And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live?
And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
Again he said unto me, Prophesy upon these bones, and
say unto them, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus saith the
Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you,
and ye shall live: And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh
upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and ye shall
live; and ye shall know that I am the LORD.
So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I
prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came
together, bone to his bone. And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the
flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them above: but there was
no breath in them.
Then said he unto me, Prophesy unto the wind, prophesy,
son of man, and say to the wind, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Come from the
four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.
So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came
into them, and they lived, and stood up upon their feet, an exceeding
great army.
Then he said unto me, Son of man, these bones are the
whole house of Israel: behold, they say, Our bones are dried, and our hope
is lost: we are cut off for our parts. Therefore prophesy and say unto
them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, O my people, I will open your
graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into
the land of Israel.
And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I
have opened your graves, O my people, and brought you up out of your
graves, And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall
place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the LORD have spoken
it, and performed it, saith the LORD. (Ezekiel 37:1-14)
In our day and time we are literally watching
the miracle of the return of the tribe of Judah to their ancestral home, and
they are, as Ezekiel prophesied, returning from the four winds - from every
corner of the world. Also, through the restoration of the Gospel through
Joseph Smith, we are watching the gathering of the House of Israel.
As proof that this 'returning' and 'gathering'
is taking place (hence a 'resurrection' of the House of Israel), a new book
of scripture was set to come forth!
The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, Moreover, thou son
of man, take thee one stick, and write upon it, For Judah, and for the
children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write upon
it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of
Israel his companions: And join them one to another into one stick; and
they shall become one in thine hand.
And when the children of thy people shall speak unto
thee, saying, Wilt thou not shew us what thou meanest by these? Say
unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of
Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel
his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of
Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.
And the sticks whereon thou writest shall be in thine
hand before their eyes. (Ezekiel 37:15-20)
A 'stick', as referred to by Ezekiel, was actually a
wooden tablet, like the ones I was able to show my children in the Gutenberg
Museum in Germany, where we learned the entire history of the Written Word.
Picture a wooden picture frame filled with wax instead of a picture. One can
then press or write anything one wants to into the wax. (You see this happen
in the movie 'Ben Hur', when the Arabian sheik comes to the roman bath to
take bets on the upcoming chariot race.) But wax is soft, and by being
pressed on what was written could be lost. So, the smart person would hinge
two 'sticks' together so that when they are closed they protect each other -
just as the Bible and the Book of Mormon
uphold and protect each other.
Ezekiel goes on to further prophesy that not only would
the peoples of these two Israelite nations be restored, but they would once
again be gathered into one single nation:
And say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the
children of Israel from among the heathen, whither they be gone, and will
gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: And I will
make them one nation in the land upon the mountains of Israel; and one
king shall be king to them all: and they shall be no more two nations,
neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all: Neither
shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their
detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions: but I will save
them out of all their dwellingplaces, wherein they have sinned, and will
cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God. And
David my servant shall be king over them; and they all shall have
one shepherd: they shall also walk in my judgments, and observe my
statutes, and do them. And they shall dwell in the land that I have given
unto Jacob my servant, wherein your fathers have dwelt; and they shall
dwell therein, even they, and their children, and their children's
children for ever: and my servant David shall be their prince for
ever. Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an
everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them,
and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore. My tabernacle
also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my
people. And the heathen shall know that I the LORD do sanctify Israel,
when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them for evermore. (Ezekiel
37:21-28)
The Book of Mormon also prophesies of these two records -
the Bible and the Book of Mormon - coming forth and 'joining forces' in
restoring the Gospel and helping to gather and restore the House of Israel.
The Lord said to Nephi, who was a descendant of Joseph,
that -
"...the fruit of thy loins shall write; and the fruit of
the loins of Judah shall write; and that which shall be written by the
fruit of thy loins, and also that which shall be written by the fruit of
the loins of Judah, shall grow together, unto the confounding of false
doctrines and laying down of contentions, and establishing peace among the
fruit of thy loins, and bringing them to the knowledge of their fathers in
the latter days, and also to the knowledge of my covenants, saith the
Lord. And out of weakness he shall be made strong, in that day when my
work shall commence among all my people, unto the restoring thee, O house
of Israel, saith the Lord. (2 Nephi 3:12-13)
The Lord places a warning to those who would reject the
Stick of Joseph because it is a new book of scripture, and they are sure the
Lord no longer gives new scripture:
Yea, wo be unto him that saith:
We have received, and we need no more! And in fine, wo unto all those who
tremble, and are angry because of the truth of God! For behold, he that is
built upon the rock receiveth it with gladness; and he that is built upon
a sandy foundation trembleth lest he shall fall.
Wo be unto him that shall say: We have received the
word of God, and we need no more of the word of God, for we have enough!
For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men
line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little;
and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto
my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I
will give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them
shall be taken away even that which they have. (2 Nephi 28:27-30;

BUT behold, there shall be many—at that day when I shall
proceed to do a marvelous work among them, that I may remember my
covenants which I have made unto the children of men, that I may set my
hand again the second time to recover my people, which are of the house of
Israel; And also, that I may remember the promises which I have made unto
thee, Nephi, and also unto thy father, that I would remember your seed;
and that the words of your seed should proceed forth out of my mouth unto
your seed; and my words shall hiss forth unto the ends of the earth, for a
standard unto my people, which are of the house of Israel;
And because my words shall hiss forth—many of the
Gentiles shall say: A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there
cannot be any more Bible. But thus saith the Lord God: O fools, they shall
have a Bible; and it shall proceed forth from the Jews, mine ancient
covenant people. And what thank they the Jews for the Bible which they
receive from them? Yea, what do the Gentiles mean? Do they remember the
travails, and the labors, and the pains of the Jews, and their diligence
unto me, in bringing forth salvation unto the Gentiles? O ye Gentiles,
have ye remembered the Jews, mine ancient covenant people? Nay; but ye
have cursed them, and have hated them, and have not sought to recover
them.
But behold, I will return all these things upon your
own heads; for I the Lord have not forgotten my people. Thou fool, that
shall say: A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible. Have
ye obtained a Bible save it were by the Jews?
Know ye not that there are more nations than one? Know
ye not that I, the Lord your God, have created all men, and that I
remember those who are upon the isles of the sea; and that I rule in the
heavens above and in the earth beneath; and I bring forth my word unto the
children of men, yea, even upon all the nations of the earth? Wherefore
murmur ye, because that ye shall receive more of my word? Know ye not that
the testimony of two nations is a witness unto you that I am God, that I
remember one nation like unto another? Wherefore, I speak the same words
unto one nation like unto another. And when the two nations shall run
together the testimony of the two nations shall run together also.
And I do this that I may prove unto many that I am the
same yesterday, today, and forever; and that I speak forth my words
according to mine own pleasure. And because that I have spoken one word ye
need not suppose that I cannot speak another; for my work is not yet
finished; neither shall it be until the end of man, neither from that time
henceforth and forever.
Wherefore, because that ye have a Bible ye need not
suppose that it contains all my words; neither need ye suppose that I have
not caused more to be written. For I command all men, both in the east and
in the west, and in the north, and in the south, and in the islands of the
sea, that they shall write the words which I speak unto them; for out of
the books which shall be written I will judge the world, every man
according to their works, according to that which is written. For behold,
I shall speak unto the Jews and they shall write it [the Bible];
and I shall also speak unto the Nephites and they shall write it [the
Book of Mormon]; and I shall also speak unto the other tribes of the
house of Israel, which I have led away, and they shall write it; and I
shall also speak unto all nations of the earth and they shall write it.
And it shall come to pass that the Jews shall have the
words of the Nephites, and the Nephites shall have the words of the Jews;
and the Nephites and the Jews shall have the words of the lost tribes of
Israel; and the lost tribes of Israel shall have the words of the Nephites
and the Jews.
And it shall come to pass that my people, which are of
the house of Israel, shall be gathered home unto the lands of their
possessions; and my word also shall be gathered in one. And I will show
unto them that fight against my word and against my people, who are of the
house of Israel, that I am God, and that I covenanted with Abraham that I
would remember his seed forever. (2 Nephi chapter 29; paragraphing and
comments by this writer)
