Jehovah - Who Is He?

The King James Version of the Holy Bible, as well as other English-language versions, have many places where the words "Lord" and "God" are fully-capitalized (as opposed to the uncapitolized "Lord" and "God"). This is your clue that the original language actually says "Jehovah", but the translators followed the Hebrew custom of reverencing the Holy Name by not using it. It's entirely proper for you to insert this Holy Name in your mind wherever you see either of these two words fully-capitalized.

So, when you are reading, for instance, that "These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens" (Genesis 2:4), what it is actually saying is that the 'Jehovah-God' created the Heavens and the earth, as opposed to 'Elohiem', who is 'God'. When you read about the 'Lord GOD" saying or doing something, this literally translates as the 'Lord Jehovah'.

Jehovah is the name of the Divine Being who leads Israel and makes covenants with Mankind. He is the God of Israel; the Holy One of Israel; the Mighty One of Jacob; the God of the Old Testament.

But who else is He? By what other name do we know Him?

Exodus 3:13-14:

"And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
"And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

The Being speaking from the burning bush simply, according to the Bible, identified Himself with the first-person reference "I AM". In Hebrew the third-person ('He Is') of 'I Am' is "Jehovah" - which literally means 'He Is'. Thus by understanding the language we discover it was Jehovah who spoke to Moses that day.

John 8:56-59:

(Jesus speaking): "Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
"Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
"Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
"Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by."

According to every Bible commentary I have read, this "I AM" contraction used by Jesus in the above passage is a quote of the usage in the Book of Exodus. Thus in the New Testament Jesus proclaimed Himself to be Jehovah. Book of Mormon quotes the Old Testament prophet Isaiah, giving us further clues:

Isaiah 49:26 /
1 Nephi
21:26:

"And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; they shall be drunken with their own blood as with sweet wine; and all flesh shall know that I, the LORD, am thy Savior and thy Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob."

The Book of Mormon prophet Nephi, in commentating this passages, says -

1 Nephi 22:12:

"Wherefore, he will bring them again out of captivity, and they shall be gathered together to the lands of their inheritance; and they shall be brought out of obscurity and out of darkness; and they shall know that the Lord is their Savior and their Redeemer, the Mighty One of Israel.

The Mighty One of Jacob (Israel) could only be Jehovah.
When the Resurrected Christ appeared to the ancient Americans (the Book of Mormon people), He introduced Himself with these words:

3 Nephi 11:10-14:     "Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. And behold, I am the light and the life of the world; and I have drunk out of that bitter cup which the Father hath given me, and have glorified the Father in taking upon me the sins of the world, in the which I have suffered the will of the Father in all things from the beginning.
"And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words the whole multitude fell to the earth; for they remembered that it had been prophesied among them that Christ should show himself unto them after his ascension into heaven.
"And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto them saying: Arise and come forth unto me, that ye may thrust your hands into my side, and also that ye may feel the prints of the nails in my hands and in my feet, that ye may know that I am the
God of Israel, and the God of the whole earth, and have been slain for the sins of the world."

After delivering His first sermon to the Book or Mormon people, a version of the Sermon on the Mount that was slightly adapted to their cultural and social situation, He testified of His divinity with these words:

3 Nephi 15:1-10:

"AND now it came to pass that when Jesus had ended these sayings he cast his eyes round about on the multitude, and said unto them: Behold, ye have heard the things which I taught before I ascended to my Father; therefore, whoso remembereth these sayings of mine and doeth them, him will I raise up at the last day.
"And it came to pass that when Jesus had said these words he perceived that there were some among them who marveled, and wondered what he would concerning the law of Moses; for they understood not the saying that old things had passed away, and that all things had become new.
"And he said unto them: Marvel not that I said unto you that old things had passed away, and that all things had become new. Behold, I say unto you that the law is fulfilled that was given unto Moses.
     "
Behold, I am he that gave the law, and I am he who covenanted with my people Israel; therefore, the law in me is fulfilled, for I have come to fulfil the law; therefore it hath an end. Behold, I do not destroy the prophets, for as many as have not been fulfilled in me, verily I say unto you, shall all be fulfilled.
"And because I said unto you that old things have passed away, I do not destroy that which hath been spoken concerning things which are to come. For behold, the covenant which I have made with my people is not all fulfilled; but the law which was given unto Moses hath an end in me.
"Behold, I am the law, and the light. Look unto me, and endure to the end, and ye shall live; for unto him that endureth to the end will I give eternal life.
"Behold, I have given unto you the commandments; therefore keep my commandments. And this is the law and the prophets, for they truly testified of me."
