KINGS - Why the
Lord Doesn't Want Them for His People
1 Samuel 8:4-22 in the Old
Testament is the story of Israel demanding their first king and Samuel's
discourse on the dangers of such an act. It's well worth reading. Then,
turn to the Book of Mormon and read three discourses on Kingship.
Mosiah chapter 2 in the Book of
Mormon is a great discourse on Service by a righteous King Benjamin - it's
always good to note a good, righteous king and give him his due.
Mosiah 24:6-18 … Alma’s
discourse to his people as to why they should not have a king.
Mosiah chapter 29 is a discourse
by King Benamin's grandson Mosiah – he has sons who are unwilling to
ascend to the throne as their desire is to spread the gospel. King Mosiah
is desirable that the people return to a government of Judges, and this
chapter is his discourse on the evils of being ruled by a king.
It's interesting that the book of
Mosiah begins with the discourse and example of a righteous man as king
and then concludes with a long discourse on the evils of kingship.
