Title / First Line Index

Not Done Yet!   This will be an on-going project. I could have simply copied other peoples' work as several were offered to me. I studied them as excellent examples of what other people had done, but none of them were exactly what I was after. I want this to be my work and not someone else's, so come back and watch it grow as I learn and discover more - I am finding great joy in this journey.

What Childish Titles!   I have included the hymns from both the congregational and all other official hymnals. So yes - some of the titles are pretty childish, because they're from children's songbooks, some of which included songs about cleaning the house and personal hygiene. They're all part of our heritage.

First Line vs. Titles   As a hymnist the proper way to title and list a hymn is by the first line of the text. However, most people know the title the editor gave the hymn better than the first line. So, with a few exceptions, I'm listing both the first line and the titles used in various LDS hymnals - some titles, however, are so well known and universal that it would be a waste to list the first line ('Battle Hymn of the Republic'; 'The Star-Spangled Banner', are two examples).

With the children's songbooks, however, I have gone with the popular title more than the first line,

"The"   Titles and first lines that begin with the words 'The', 'A', and 'An' as well as other prepositions are alphabetized under said prepositions, which is the way of doing things since the computer started alphabetizing for us.

Contractions   In some hymnals "There's" has been changed to "There is"; the same with other contractions. ("There's Sunshine in My Soul" has become "There is Sunshine in My Soul".) If you don't find a title one way, look for it the other way.

W. W. Phelps   Brother Phelps adapted and edited many hymns; some of his editing is still in use. Hymns marked with an author as "ed. by W.W. Phelps" or "adapt. by W. W. Phelps" are hymns he either edited or adapted. Hymns marked as "attributed to W.W. Phelps" are hymns attributed to him as no earlier copies are known and we're not sure if someone else wrote them or not.

Authors   Different hymnals will have different authors credited for the same text, but because research is on-going I will list them according to the most recent volume.

Sacred, Popular, and 'Wiggle' Songs   There are seasonal & recreational songs as well as 'activity' songs (what we call 'wiggle songs') in the songbooks for children. I was not going to index the wiggle songs, but those with whom I conferred exclaimed most forcefully that wiggle songs are as much a part of our musical heritage as sacred songs. My target audience has spoken - I am including all songs titles in this index - sacred, seasonal, lullabies, nursery rhymes, and wiggle songs.

Links to Texts   Texts that are more complete or original than what is in LDS hymnals are linked so you can read the complete/original texts. Also, I have included all the texts from the original LDS hymnal as people enjoy seeing what hymns started it all for Latter-day Saint hymnals. As I continue on I will also include links to other texts of particular interest from other past LDS hymnals.

Here is a quick-list of the hymnals included in this index;
for more info on each hymnal, CLICK HERE.
An "X" mark is for those hymnals that are in this index. The rest will come as my research continues.
