Scriptures on Singing and on Song

I did an electronic search of the words Sing - Sang - Song - Sung, and these are the pertinent passages I found.

Referring to Strong's Concordance with many of them, I discovered these words, in Hebrew, covered a full range of definitions - singing,  proclaiming; pleading; responding; crying out loudly.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Exodus 15:1-2 (1-9):  Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea. The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.

Exodus 15:21: And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

Numbers 21:17-20: Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing* ye unto it: The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah: And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth: And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon. (*NOTE: The second use of the work 'sing' in this passage means to 'respond' or 'testify'.)

Deuteronomy 31:14-22:  And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thy days approach that thou must die: call Joshua, and present yourselves in the tabernacle of the congregation, that I may give him a charge. And Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the tabernacle of the congregation. And the LORD appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud: and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle. And the LORD said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers; and this people will rise up, and go a whoring after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them. Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us? And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods. Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel. For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant. And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware.  Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.

Deuteronomy 31:24-30:  And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying, Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death? Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them. For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands. And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended.

Deuteronomy 32:44-46 (1-44):  And Moses came and spake all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea the son of Nun. And Moses made an end of speaking all these words to all Israel: And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.

Judges 5:1-2 (1-30):  Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying, Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves. Hear, O ye kings; give ear, O ye princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.

1 Samuel 21:11: And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands? ('Sing' in this passage means 'reply'; 'respond'; 'testify'.)

1 Samuel 29:5:  Is not this David, of whom they sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands? ('Sing' in this passage means 'reply'; 'respond'; 'testify'.)

          because he cometh to judge the earth.

And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. And when the burnt offering began, the song of the LORD began also with the trumpets, and with the instruments ordained by David king of Israel. And all the congregation worshipped, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded: and all this continued until the burnt offering was finished. And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped. Moreover Hezekiah the king and the princes commanded the Levites to sing praise unto the LORD with the words of David, and of Asaph the seer. And they sang praises with gladness, and they bowed their heads and worshipped.

Ezra 3:10-11: And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise the LORD, after the ordinance of David king of Israel. And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.

HOW TO PRAISE GOD -
as taught in the Book of Psalms

Psalms 66:1-2:
“Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands:
Sing forth the honor of his name;
make his praise glorious.”

We are told to make a "joyful noise" seven times in the Old Testament: Psalms 66:1; Psalms 81:1; Psalms 95: 1,2; Psalms 98:4,6; Psalms 100:1. The root Hebrew word is 'hariu', and literally means 'to mar' (especially by breaking); figuratively 'to split' the ears (with sound), i.e. 'shout' (for alarm or joy). In the King James Version it is also translated as 'blow an alarm', 'cry' (alarm, aloud, out), 'destroy', 'make a joyful noise', 'smart', 'shout' (for joy), 'sound an alarm', 'triumph'.

When the Children of Israel shouted to bring down the walls of Jericho, this is the Hebrew word used to describe the sound they made. In Job chapter 38 when the morning stars 'shouted' for joy, this is the word used to describe their shout. When Zechariah commanded "Shout, O daughter of Zion", this was the word used to describe her shout.

Psalms 98:4:
“Make a joyful noise unto the LORD…
make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.”

Psalms 7:17:
“I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness;
and will sing praise to the name of the LORD most high.”

Psalms 9:11:
“Sing praises to the LORD, which dwelleth in Zion:
declare among the people his doings.”

Psalms 13:6:
“I will sing unto the LORD,
because he hath dwelt bountifully with me.”

Psalms 18:49:
“Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD
and sing praises unto thy name.”

Psalms 21:13:
“…so will we sing and praise thy power.”

Psalms 33:2-3:
“Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery
and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song;
play skillfully and with a loud noise.”

Psalms 47:5-7:
“God is gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises: sing praises unto our King, sing praises.
For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.”

Psalms 57:7-10:
My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed:
I will sing and give praise. Awake up, my glory;
awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early.
I will praise thee, O Lord, among the people:
I will sing unto thee among the nations.
For thy mercy is great unto the heavens,
and thy truth unto the clouds."

Psalms 59:16-17:
“But I will sing of thy power;
yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning:
for thou hast been my defense and refuge
in the day of my trouble.
Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing:
for God is my defense,
and the God of my mercy.”

“So will I sing praise unto thy name forever,
that I may daily perform my vows [covenants]”
(note added by myself)

Sing forth the honor of his name…”

“O let the nations be glad and sing for joy:
for thou shalt judge the people righteously…”

they sang his praise.”

"O God, my heart is fixed;
I will sing and give praise…”

“Praise the LORD; for the LORD is good:
sing praises unto his name; for it is pleasant.”

Psalms 146:2:
“While I live will I praise the LORD:
I will sing praises unto my God while I have any being.”

Psalms 147:7:
“…sing unto the LORD with thanksgiving…”

Psalms 150:
PRAISE ye the LORD.
Praise God in his sanctuary:
Praise him in the firmament of his power.
Praise him for his mighty acts:
Praise him according to his excellent greatness.
Praise him with the sound of the trumpet:
Praise him with the psaltery and harp.
Praise him with the timbrel and dance:
Praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
Praise him upon the loud cymbals:
Praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD.
Praise ye the LORD.
